Alexandria, Virginia
This map of Alexandria, Virginia was created by me as part of the practical portion of the mid-term exam in the Geographic Information Systems II (GIS 201) course at Northern Virginia Community College. I was also required to answer, with the help of desktop GIS software, a number of questions about the area covered by the map and the data from which the map was created. Washington & Old Dominion Trail

Maps of the Washington & Old Dominion Railroad Regional Park were created by me for the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority (NVRPA, now NOVA Parks). The maps, like all the other outputs of my work there, are intended as a reference for park users and staff and depict mileposts, road crossings, and selected other landmarks on the Washington & Old Dominion Railroad Trail. The landmarks are labeled by name and elevation in feet above sea level. To label the landmarks in this way, a special field was added to the landmark shapefile’s attribute table that concatenated each landmark’s name and its elevation.
The results of my work on the Washington & Old Dominion Railroad Trail can be seen on ArcGIS Online, as can the features that I mapped in Meadowlark Botanical Gardens. There, my work involved adding the trails in the newly created Korean Bell Garden to the park authority’s GIS. I also modified an existing buildings dataset to add the buildings in the Korean Bell Garden.
Coltsville National Historical Park

The district surrounding the former Colt firearms factory in Hartford, CT is unofficially known as Coltsville. Built in the 19th century to house the Colt factory’s workforce, Coltsville was informed by the firearms pioneer Samuel Colt’s notions about an ideal community. It was thus an outstanding example of a “company town”, of which many traces remain today, although the area has long been a part of Hartford. This, along with the Colt factory’s significance as the site of many innovations in mass production from interchangeable parts, led to the area’s designation as a national park in 2014. My master’s thesis involved forecasting the impacts on Hartford of visitors to the park once it is operational. This map of the park appeared in my thesis. Because the map’s data sources were cited in the caption that appeared below the map in my thesis paper, the map itself contains no citations; click here to see the data sources and the thumbnail to see the map.
Emergency Medical Services coverage in New London County, Connecticut
This map was the result of an exercise in the Location Analysis (Geography 5100) class at the University of Connecticut. By solving a variant of the location set-covering problem, ten hypothetical EMS facilities were positioned within the county so as to maximize the area within 7.5 miles of a facility. The map, left, shows the locations of the facilities and their coverage areas.
Median Age in the United States
I made this map as an exercise in the Application Issues of GIS course at the University of Connecticut in the spring of 2015. The map shows median age (for both genders) in the United States at the county or equivalent level as of 2000.
Chicago Public Libraries
This online mapping application was made by me as part of a LinkedIn Learning course on the real-world applications of GIS. On the map, the libraries are symbolized by their service hours. Click on the image to view the app.
