Keyhole Markup Language

Screenshot of the W&OD Trail from a high elevationThe following KML files were one of the final outputs of my work with the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority. For the Authority’s Washington & Old Dominion Railroad Regional Park I was required to map the elevations at mileposts along the trail that comprises the park. This information was to be made available on the Friends of the W&OD Park web site for use by bicyclists, hikers, and other park users. The idea of providing the elevations at mileposts in the form of a KML file originated with me.

Low-elevation view of W&OD TrailThe compressed folder below contains three KML files and four image files. Each of the four image files depicts one of four different types of landmark (mileposts, road crossings, trail’s highest point, and miscellaneous other types). To view the trail and its mileposts, open the Elevations.kml file. To avoid clutter, at higher elevations the individual mileposts are not visible; rather, an outline of the entire trail (ParkOutline.kml, the red line running from NW to SE in the top image) appears. Zooming in to a level of detail below 2200 pixels causes the outline to disappear and the individual mileposts (Landmarks.kml, one placemark shown in the bottom image) to appear instead. Additional information, such as the landmark’s elevation and time mapped, can be viewed by clicking on each placemark.
